Designer Tips 3 Things That Will Transform Your Living Room 01/30/2018 Share Not everyone is ready to tackle an entire living room makeover, so we are sharing 3 things that have the potential to totally transform the look of your living room. Source: McGinn Photography #1 The Right Rug Rugs anchor a room, especially the living room. They are the biggest decorating accessory which means having the right rug will instantly transform your space. Size it Up An area rug should be big enough to fit all 4 legs of your largest furniture pieces on it. If that isn’t possible, fitting just the front 2 legs on the rug is another good option. This will help the room feel connected. If you are on the fence about which size rug to purchase, choosing the larger size is almost always the better option. TIP: make an outline using masking tape on the floor to test the size of rug in the room before purchasing. Material Matters Choose the right material for the purposes of the room. Wool rugs are usually the easiest to maintain. If you expect the floors to get a little dirty, stay away from silk and viscose because they are more complicated to clean. Do your research and buy a rug that will suit your room and the people in it. Follow these tips to learn how to frame your windows correctly and take your room to the next level: Correct Installation One of the most common mistakes is mounting the rod right above the window. This will make the ceiling feel shorter so try to mount the rod around 2-3 inches below the ceiling or molding. Extend the rod around 4-6 inches wider than the window. This will allow more natural light to enter from the window, make the window appear larger and the ceilings look taller. Dress to Impress If possible, use drapery that is lined. Lined curtains will hang better and look higher quality. Also, make sure the panels touch the floor because drapery that is too short will draw attention to it. Coordinate Next Door Window treatments don’t have to be the same in every room but they should all coordinate together and flow from room to room. Use colors and patterns that work together to create unity throughout the entire home. Source: Studio McGee We love the look of a fresh, white drapery to soften a room. Although they are a finishing touch to a room, pillows can take the look of a home to another level. The right pillow combinations will instantly transform a room. Cohesive Combinations Choose colors for your pillows that will highlight your existing furniture without taking control of the room. Create a cohesive look with color but make it interesting with pattern play. Use different patterns in various scales to create a pillow combination that is perfect for your room. Make a Difference To create an exciting look, use various sizes and shapes of pillows. Creating contrast through fabric is a great trick to create an inviting and unique pillow combination.
