How to Decorate Around a TV

One very frequent question we get at SwatchPop!…”How do I decorate around my TV?”

While we don’t want the TV to serve as the focal point of the room, it’s kind of hard to ignore it. For the sake of function, most of us arrange our furniture around it.

Today, we’re sharing some creative ways to decorate around the TV, many of which are actual SwatchPop! Solutions we’ve created for our client’s living rooms. The goal is to make the TV blend in a bit more, as though it’s an intentional part of the wall decor.

1. Over the mantel. This is my personal favorite. I know there are people (mostly husbands) that don’t want the TV over the mantel because they feel they’ll need to crane their neck to see it. I disagree and have never had a sore neck even after binge watching two hour episodes of Bachelor In Paradise. A television over the mantel keeps the focal point where it should be…on the fireplace. It makes it easy to arrange the furniture and fills the blank wall space over the mantel. Bonus…you avoid having to spend a fortune on art! Depending on the size of the TV, you can place a few simple objects on either side of the TV or leave the rest of the mantel bare.

There are also some really cool “TV garages” now available that will disguise the television completely. Here are a few we love from Pottery Barn

2. A gallery wall. If your TV sits on a media cabinet, arrange a gallery wall around it. You want a nice piece of furniture here. Don’t try to make it work with that cheap plastic media cabinet that has followed you since college. It will never look right.

This was a design we created for a Georgia SwatchPopper who felt that her TV was sticking out like a sore thumb. We found these neutral framed documents and arranged them symmetrically around the television to create a clean and polished look. A pair of antlers directly over the TV are just right for the modern farmhouse look she was going for in her home.

This Virginia SwatchPopper has more eclectic taste, so we created an asymmetrical arrangement with a lot of interesting, eye-catching elements around her television.

3. Anchored by furniture. Do not let your TV “float” on the wall. Your husband or boyfriend might try to convince you that the huge flat screen should be mounted by itself to give the living room that “theater quality” experience, but you will not fall victim to his mind games. Anchor that monstrosity with a piece of furniture. We love a console table or a nice cabinet like this one from LizMarieBlog.com

This TV is anchored by substantial shelves. Another great option from Shanty 2Chic.

Here’s a similar look we created using floating shelves and large wood plaques for a Virginia SwatchPopper with eclectic style…

Wood wall art

Reclaimed wood shelving

Wire baskets

Coat rack

Round boxes

Storage bench

And another example of using wood wall plaques behind the TV. This time with a more casual, traditional style.

Wood plaques

Woven baskets

Double ball topiary
