How to Successfully Pair Rugs

Choosing a rug for a room can be a daunting task. Now, imagine the stress of needing to pick out multiple rugs for an open-concept floor plan or a large-size room. Using all of the same rugs could work, but pairing together different rugs is a much better option. Interior designers have mastered the art of pairing rugs together and we want to teach you how to do it successfully too!

We will try and make this as easy as possible, so here are 3 helpful tips:

1. HAVE A COMMON COLOR

Our biggest tip in mixing rugs is to have at least one common color. If one of the rugs has multiple colors, pick one of the colors to use in the second rug. Don’t try to introduce a brand new color scheme in the second rug. Keep the rugs cohesive in color without being exactly the same. Pairing rugs by color makes them look unified and balanced without being too repetitive.

2. USE DIFFERENT SIZED PATTERNS

The key to pairing patterns in rugs is scale. Patterns are categorized into large, medium and small when it comes to scale and successful mixing involves a variety of these sizes. A space can look visually unbalanced when patterns of the same scale are used so close together. For example, use a large scale patterned rug and opt for a small scale pattern for the other rug.

3. INCLUDE VARIOUS TEXTURES

Pairing different textures in rugs is a great way to add visual interest to a space. For example, a rough jute rug can create a beautiful contrast against a smooth, low-pile rug. Since the rugs will most likely have a similar color in common, adding a different texture will instantly add contrast and balance to the space.
